Sildenafil
On-demand support
How it works
Sildenafil is the most extensively studied PDE5 inhibitor. Like other members of the class, it blocks the enzyme that breaks down cGMP, prolonging the vasodilatory signal in the corpus cavernosum during sexual stimulation.
It does not initiate an erection independent of stimulation and does not increase desire.
What is known about the class
Sildenafil has a plasma half-life of about four hours, supporting on-demand rather than daily use.
The nitrate contraindication is absolute. Common transient effects include headache, flushing, nasal congestion, and indigestion; rare visual disturbances have been reported.
Class-level information. Individual dose, schedule, and monitoring are set by the prescribing physician.
How this medication is regulated
Sildenafil is FDA-approved. It is a prescription-only medication (brand names include Viagra and Revatio); generic formulations are widely available.
If a provider considers Sildenafil for a member
An oral PDE5 inhibitor that supports blood flow during sexual stimulation — a shorter-duration, as-needed option and the most extensively studied medication in its class. Sildenafil is an FDA-approved medication, available only by prescription; timing and dose are determined by the prescribing physician.
A provider may consider sildenafil when an assessment surfaces erectile-performance concerns, the cardiovascular and medication picture supports safe use, and an on-demand pattern fits how the individual wants to approach treatment.
An oral tablet taken as-needed before sexual activity. Timing and strength are individualized by the prescribing physician and refined based on your response — no universal dose is published here.
